ahh my final placement was in adult mental health - in a commnity team and i loved it so much i got a job doing adult mental health, its great because as a social work student youy will be the resource, you will be able to do anxiety management , time management , relaxatuion skills ect with people, there maybe scope for you to facilitate groups as there was for me. it all felt like proper social work, building relationships with excluded people, fighting stigma etc let us know how you get on........good luck!

Good luck with it. I just found out I am going to be placed with a fostering&adoption team for 6 months so I'm beyond overjoyed about this.

A lot of people on my course (98%) still haven't heard. There have been tales of newly qualified social workers who didn't get statutory placements in their final year not being able to find work and so everybody is incredibly nervous.

I agree that the task force report contains many good points, especially in relation to training.

If you havent tracked down the full report yet - here is a link to the DCSF press release, which itself links to the full report. http://www.dcsf.gov.uk/pns/DisplayPN.cgi?pn_id=2009_0231 Hope that helps.

I've also blogged about the SWTF - check it out at http://socialcareblog.wordpress.com.

I watched this and your summary is very detailed and like the documentary, very thought provoking. Its good that this was shown as hopefully more people will feel for carers and cut them more slack.

In my opinion there were (and I suspect still are) serious flaws in the psychiatric diagnostic process. I was 'written off' with a diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia in my late teens/early twenties back in 1968-1974. This diagnosis dictated my 'heavy' treatment with neuroleptic medication and ECT, which reduced me to a zombie.

Once I came off all treatment (against medical advice) in 1974, I was fine, and have been so since. I cannot, however, claim to have recovered from schizophrenia, as there is every reason for me to believe I should never have been given such a diagnosis (or the treatment for it) in the first place.

Having just read your post i would support sw2b response. My daughter has been hospitalized for 2 years now with schizophrenia and beleive me she does not wallow in her illness. She would want more than anything not to have this disability.

Furthermore it is my opinion that without medication my daughter would be dead due to the risky behaviours she poses when unwell.

I feel that your article had some good points but this is a very emotive topic for many people who live with mental illness and i do not feel that this was considered within your article.

Furthermore, given that you are a student social worker i would be very careful about making assumptions around a very emotive topic. (your friend being unwell). This is not good practice!

Kind Regards
